Naturopathy Medicine is more than just a set of principles, although it does include six basic principles of healing listed below.

Naturopathic Medicine is a healing science which treats illnesses and diseases without surgery or synthetic drugs. It uses a variety of non-invasive diagnostic and testing practices, and natural healing treatments which minimize discomfort, risks, and side effects to the person needing healing.

Since Naturopahy deals with the whole person not just the body, it often includes therapeutic counseling and support which helps to strengthen and heal the mental, social, and spiritual aspects of illness and diseases, and at the same time, promotes optimum healing to the body.

Naturopathic treatments take advantage of the body's inherent ability to heal. It gives this natural healing ability a boost when needed ... such as when a disease occurs, or mental or emotional problems arise ... worry, depression, grief, etc. For more info, click here.

The Six Basic Principles of Naturopathy
  1. The Healing Power of Nature – Our bodies and minds have powerful, natural healing mechanisms that maintain and restore health. In Naturopathic Medicine, a Naturopathy Doctor recognizes and acknowledges this natural healing power of the body, and works with it to achieve optimal health by using these inherent and powerful healing systems. The Naturopathy Doctor is aware that mind, body, and soul all have to be in balance, and helps the client to achieve this balance in order realize the best possible outcomes.

  2. Identify and Treat the Cause (find the underlying cause of disease) – A Naturopath Doctor knows there are several reasons for disease: genetic, malnutrition, toxicity, or pH imbalance. By understanding the principle of "finding the underlying cause" and doing so, a Naturopath Doctor does not treat to suppress symptoms, leaving the underlying cause unresolved. The Naturopath Doctor knows that if the root-cause is not eliminated, symptoms may recur again and again which is not conducive the client's well being and overall optimal health.

  3. First Do No Harm – Naturopathic practitioners utilize testing, diagnosing, and healing treatment methods that are non-invasive and which give their clients the least risk of harmful side effects or discomfort. They are always aware of, and respect, an individual's self-healing abilities and do all they can to work with them instead of against them. They do all possible not to use treatments or methods that will supress existing symptoms while promoting new or different symptoms or problems that must be dealt with.

  4. Treat the Whole Person – The Naturopathy Doctor takes into account the whole person's needs and interactions between the body, and the emotional, mental, and spiritual selves. They also take into consideration genetic, environmental, and social factors which may have a bearing on the individual. The Naturopathic Doctor is committed to treating and helping the whole person in every aspect of their lives as each plays a part in an individual's total health and healing abilities.

  5. A Naturopath is a Teacher – The Naturopathy Doctor educates and empowers clients through teaching and counseling as well as providing healing treatments. They teach their clients self-responsibility for their health, and tell them what they must do to achieve optimal on-going good health and how to improve the quality of their lives.

  6. Preventive Approach – The Naturopathic Doctor emphasizes prevention of illnesses and diseases on an individualized basis as it pertains to a specific client. The doctor makes appropriate suggestions and outlines preventions and interventions in partnership with their clients so they can prevent illness in their lives. Naturopathic Medicine as a whole is committed to on-going wellness and health for each individual, to the maximum.
